Paint the Town, Starting With the Living Room
The last paintbrush any of you held was for a home DIY project, and the only art on your fridges was done by someone under ten. Everyone swears they used to be the creative one. Then you floated a weekend where the art comes to the apartment and the cocktails come after, and suddenly the whole group remembered they'd always wanted to paint. Canvas and Cocktails Weekend is the full picture: your own chic Melbourne city apartment, grazing delivered to the door, a painting workshop that comes to you and a round of cocktails and share plates at our blossom filled cocktail bar in the heart of the city. Time with your girls was never meant to be squeezed in around the housework. It belongs with the essentials, and it looks good on canvas too.
Your own chic Melbourne city apartment is the blank canvas, and it doesn't stay blank for long. Bags land by the door, and before anyone's got their jacket off there's already a fight over the playlist. Then your phone rings and the grazing arrives, a mix of sweet and savoury spread across the table like a still life nobody has any intention of leaving alone. Everyone circles it and favourites get claimed before anything's been tasted. For once, nobody's stuck in the kitchen playing host.
Next comes the knock, and your own painting artist host walks in with everything you'll need, right down to an apron for each of you, which going by some of the brushwork is a very smart call. The living room turns into a studio that's just for your group. Your host takes you through it step by step, then hands over the creative freedom, and that's when things get interesting. It starts careful, a little colour here and a line there. A few sips later the brushstrokes get braver and the commentary gets louder. Everyone follows exactly the same steps and not one canvas looks like another, which says a lot about this lot. Each of you takes your painting home, but first the whole row gets propped against the couch for the gallery shot.
With the canvases drying against the wall, the brushes don't get put away, they just get smaller. Acrylics make way for eyeshadow palettes, and the blending at the mirror is taken every bit as seriously as the painting was. There's a smudge of paint on at least one elbow and nobody's saying a word. The outfit vote happens right in front of the new gallery, spritzes in hand, and somehow every look ends up matching someone's canvas.
Then it's out into the city for the opening night. Our cocktail bar sits right in the heart of Melbourne, all blush tones and gold touches, with cherry blossoms blooming overhead and booths you'll want to sink into. Your seating's reserved so the whole group lands together, and a round of cocktails arrives to kick off the launch party. The share plates keep coming from the chef, the kind of food that gets passed round and quietly fought over, and the talk moves well past the life updates into the stories you only tell in person.
When you get home the paintings are waiting right where you left them, and the couch turns into an art panel. Every canvas gets a critique that's louder than the last. The one everybody secretly thinks is best never gets named out loud. The gallery reopens after a sleep in for a daylight viewing in pyjamas, and the critics have softened considerably overnight.
We’ve spent years curating girls weekends around the things that make time together actually feel special, and this one has all the right ingredients. Grazing around the table, paintbrushes in hand, getting ready together and cocktails under the blossoms. Then everyone heads home with a painting of their own, hung proudly and, in at least one house, slightly crooked.
Everyone went home with a painting, and the group went home with the full picture. Call or chat with us on 1300 339 734, or send a message through Our Contact Form to check availability.
