In Carbs We Trust
Collectively, you’ve never met a carb you didn’t like. Pasta, pizza, garlic bread… frankly, you don’t trust anyone who says they’re “not really a bread person”. So when you pitched a weekend that runs entirely on carbs, nobody even pretended to think about it. With a hands on gnocchi masterclass and lunch, your own chic Melbourne city apartment, a pizza dinner party at our riverfront restaurant and our rooftop bar to finish it's all in the name. Food has always been how this lot finds its way back to each other, and time with your girls belongs with the essentials, right next to the bread.
It starts, very civilised, with a fresh coffee each as you settle into our gnocchi bar, all exposed brick and wine lined walls. The long timber benches are already dusted white. You're sharing the class with other food lovers, which only makes your group louder. The chef takes everyone through the secrets of good gnocchi, and three rolls in there's flour on every sleeve and at least one gnocchi that looks more like modern art than lunch. Now we aren't banking on your newly found gnocchi talents yet so your chef is on hand to whip up a delicious gnocchi pomodoro for you to enjoy with a glass of wine - naturally. Your handmade gnocchi comes home with you to cook, along with a goodie bag to make more, so if you're game enough to attempt a recreation you have everything you need.
The gnocchi gets carried into your own chic Melbourne city apartment like precious cargo and goes straight in the fridge beside the drinks. Shoes come off, wine glasses are sourced and bottles start popping open as the playlist is debated. The flour gets dusted off and the setting powder comes out, and hair is curled with the same care that went into the gnocchi. Someone calls for the good bronzer from the mirror queue, wine in hand, and anyone who packed something with a bit of stretch in it is suddenly looking very smart.
Round two of the carbs is on the waterfront. Our riverfront restaurant sits right by the water with the city lighting up on the other side, and your table's reserved and waiting. A glass of bubbly each arrives as you sit because nothing pairs with the queen of carbs like sparkling. And what a queen she is, delicious pizzas are served sharing style, with salads to mix it up a little and crispy fries because if we're talking carbs you cannot forget the humble potato. Hands cross the table constantly and nobody guards a slice, which after the day you've had is real love. The group that started the morning covered in flour is now holding pizza, and honestly, nobody sees a problem with that.
Up next is our rooftop bar, where the carbs take a back seat to the bubbles. Your reserved area's waiting among the barrel tables and big lounges, with the glittering Melbourne skyline all around. A bottle of bubbly for the group gets poured as you land, and the discounted cocktail menu makes the next round an easy yes. This is where the night stretches out like good dough, and somebody raises a glass to the gnocchi.
Back at the apartment the couch debrief ranks every carb of the day, and the gnocchi wins by a whisker. In the morning the goodie bags get a proper look over coffee and toast, because in bread we trust, and a gnocchi night back home is already being planned.
