Every so often somebody mentions something cheeky like a male revue, the whole group goes suspiciously quiet, and then everyone carries on like they weren't just extremely interested. It's been floated enough times to become a running joke, but our Sip, Tease Weekend is no joke. With your own chic Melbourne city apartment, rooftop bubbly, seated tickets to a male revue and a VIP booth at our glam laneway cocktail lounge to finish, how could it be? Some ideas deserve to make it out of the group chat. Particularly the ones involving very few shirts.
Your own chic Melbourne city apartment is where the build-up starts. Bags hit the floor, the music goes on and every available power point is immediately claimed. For now, the only thing being teased is everyone's hair, with backcombing brushes doing the rounds, heels being tried on and swapped back and a bottle opened to assist with important outfit decisions. Getting ready in one room with your girls is still the best warm-up act there is.
First, the sip. Head up to our rooftop bar, where your reserved space and a bottle of bubbly are waiting among the greenery with the Melbourne skyline all around you. Pour the first glasses, settle in and enjoy the fact that after all that talk, you're actually doing it. There's a discounted cocktail menu too, should the occasion call for another round. We suspect it might.
Then, the tease. Take your seats at the male revue and enjoy a glass of bubbly each before the lights go down. Topless waiters make their way around the room before the performers take the stage with far more choreography than anyone was braced for. The music gets louder, the shirts become increasingly unnecessary and suddenly the group chat has a lot of new material. Make the most of the photo opportunities too. Some memories deserve evidence.
After the show, head to our glam laneway cocktail lounge, where your group skips the cover charge and your VIP booth is waiting with another bottle of bubbly chilling at the table. The whole show gets replayed move by move over the first glass, complete with differing accounts of who enjoyed which part the most. Then the dancefloor wins, and the booth becomes home base between songs.
Later, heels come off at the apartment door and everyone collapses onto the couch for the debrief, which mostly consists of favourite moments being discussed in unnecessary detail and stage routines acted out from a seated position. Nobody needs to say it, but somebody eventually will: why did it take us this long?
We’ve planned enough girls weekends to know that sometimes half the fun is in the anticipation. The hair teased at the mirror, the first bottle popped above the city, the moment the lights go down and the show that’s still being reenacted back at the apartment hours later.
