Clay and pottery girls trips, hands in the clay, heads out of the diary

Admit it, you’ve watched at least one pottery video at midnight and thought, ’I could do that.’ Now’s your chance. Your own host, a lump of clay each and a few little pieces to take home, then dinner, drinks and somewhere to stay for all of you.

Why the girls keep picking clay

The clay can take it.

Everyone in this group has lost an hour of sleep to pottery videos. Someone turns a lump of clay into something ridiculously cute while you lie there wondering if you could do that too. You took the hint from your own search history.

Some heads think best when the hands are busy. Eyes on the clay, somebody says the thing she’s been carrying around for weeks, and nobody looks up, which is exactly why it comes out. Said out loud with the girls around you, it’s a lot smaller than it felt.

Some of you will make a tidy little bowl and some will make a creature of uncertain species, but everyone will swear it’s meant to look like that. By the end the table is covered in little pieces that look remarkably like the women who made them.

There’s a version of you that only comes out around these women, loud and entirely unbothered, and she’s well overdue some time off.

What happens on a clay girls weekend

A lump each, a host and a lot of laughing.

A clay and pottery girls trip with My Ultimate is a hands-on clay workshop with your own host, at your apartment or in a studio just for your group, built into a whole girls weekend with somewhere to stay, food, drinks and a night out.

  1. Friends doing their makeup together on big white sofas before heading out

    Home base first.

Bags down, the living room claimed and outfits held up for the group verdict, because once you head out the afternoon rolls straight on.

  2. Three friends relaxing with glasses of bubbly on a leafy rooftop lounge

    Bubbly up high, in Melbourne.

A rooftop with oversized lounges and share plates, the kind of catch up that needs several stories going at once.

  3. Two friends leaning over the table shaping clay in a pink studio

Then your host lays it all out.

At the apartment dining table in Melbourne, or in a studio that’s all yours in Sydney and Brisbane. For a while the room goes very quiet with concentration.

  4. Two friends smiling over their clay pieces at a pottery workshop table

Little bowls, tiny vases and the odd creature.

Each of you shapes your own pieces and decorates them your way. Somebody says ’it’s meant to look like that’ at least four times.

  5. Three friends laughing and showing off their clay pieces against a pink wall

    The great reveal.

Every piece held up for inspection, and somebody already researching pottery classes. We support the new personality.

  6. Three friends laughing and pulling faces with cocktails at a busy bar

    Then the night heads out.

Pizza by the river in Melbourne, hot grazing and a bottle by the water in Sydney, a tropical garden bar and a VIP booth in Brisbane. There’s still a little clay under a few fingernails.

What kind of girls group clay suits

Makers, first timers and the ones who just want to chat.

It works for the friend with a saved folder of pottery videos, and for the one who says she’s not creative and then makes the best piece on the table.

The whole group cuddled up and laughing together on the apartment couch

The midnight pottery video watchers.

You took the hint from your own search history. Finally, the clay.

The ones who say they’re not creative.

Air dry clay doesn’t care. Neither does anyone at the table.

The group with a lot to talk about.

Busy hands, easier talking. Things get said over clay that never come up over coffee.

Holidays that haven’t been holidays.

Flat pack furniture and folding washing don’t count. This one does.

A birthday with a keepsake.

Everyone goes home with something they made beside the birthday girl.

Friends from different chapters.

School friends, work friends and somebody’s sister, comparing creatures of uncertain species.

What pairs well with clay

Every clay weekend already works on its own. These are the things that sit beautifully beside it, and a few of them can be added to the weekends above.

Every creative girls trip idea

Good to know before your clay workshop

The small things the girls will ask about.

What to wear

Something that doesn’t mind a bit of clay, and nails you’re happy to get messy.

Drinks

In Sydney and Brisbane the studio is BYO, with somewhere to keep the drinks cool. In Melbourne the workshop is at your apartment.

What you make

Small hand-built pieces: little bowls, dishes, tiny vases, and in Sydney earrings and keyrings too.

Booking a pottery class, or a whole girls weekend

Same clay, a very different weekend.

Plenty of groups book a class and have a great afternoon. Then comes the bit after: where to eat, who’s booking it, the footpath debate between bars and everyone peeling off in separate rides with their wet clay on their laps.

A clay girls weekend with My Ultimate has the apartment, the food, the drinks and where to next already lined up around the workshop, so the creatures get reviewed on the couch, heels in hand, with everyone there.

Somewhere to stay, already in it.One living room for the getting ready, the drying pieces and the morning coffee.
One front door at the end of the night.Everyone heads home to the same place, still debating what that creature is.
